Paying tithe is giving 10% of your income back to God, based on the principles in Leviticus 27:30 "All the tithe of the land... is the Lord's:  It is holy unto the LORD". 

Malachi 3:8-18 speaks of the blessings of giving and the shame of robbing God.

"Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me now herewith, said the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it".
